Self-care is not selfish - Friday

This week as we are in the months of love and close to Valentines day. I wanted to remind you self-care is not selfish and that we need to take time to look after ourselves and not just others.
Each day this week i have been talking to a different health and well-being expert to find out more about what they do, recommendations on how to look after health and wellness and what they like to do to take timeout.
Today I have been speaking with Angela Philippi who is a teacher of Meditation and Mindfulness. Angela is extremely passionate about showing people how easily meditation can fit in to your daily life and the benefits it has.
Tell me a little bit about yourself and how you became interested in Meditation?
Originally born in Germany, Angela Philippi moved to Cheltenham in 2007, just over 10 years ago.
“Throughout my life, I never quite understood why there was so much discontentment in most people and especially in myself. It seemed to me as if everything around me and within me was rather fear-driven and anything but joyful.
I had a tendency towards experiencing anxiety and depression, and this therefore led to a lot of questions: “there must be more to life than this”, “there must be something that can’t be fully comprehended or defined through the mind”, “why can’t I be happier”, etc.
Through trial and error and a lifetime of dedication to learning how the mind functions, I developed a natural interest in more holistic ways of living and dealing with the daily ups and downs of life.
I started to do a lot of research into holistic therapies and techniques, and it was great to see that there was something to be learned from every book, every article, every branch of science and art.
I absorbed everything I could that I thought might be useful to me personally, as I became increasingly determined and serious about feeling better and more at peace with myself.
After practicing meditation occasionally, I then decided to become a graduate of Zenways as a meditation and mindfulness teacher.
I learned an enormous amount during my training, not only about myself but also about how I was able to teach others.
It included over a year of study and practicing prior to me achieving my qualifications.
How can mediation help with our health and well-being or share a top tip?
Regular meditation practice helps you to manage your emotions and constant thought streams better, as it increases awareness and gives you a different perspective on things.
We can learn to become the observer of thoughts and feelings without judging them. It also helps to build a different relationship to stress, difficult feelings, negative thoughts. We simply have more tools to deal with these difficulties, when they arise.
In session 3 and 4 of my Awareness and Well-being Course, we learn how to deal with physical and emotional pain.
Instead of wishing or pushing pain away, we focus on it and allow it to be there, trying to have a friendly and welcoming attitude towards it without getting involved into the mental commentary. This is a great skill to have and anyone can learn it, even if you do experience pain often, this is the best opportunity to practise.
How have you been able to help people remotely during covid-19
I have been teaching my course online via zoom. I have been doing a guided meditation at the end of each session which has been a great way way to stay in touch with everyone.
What is the one thing you would recommend to people with regards to health and wellness during this time?
Keep your self busy and find yourself an interesting creative hobby to do with purpose.
As this month is about the importance of self-care tell us what you like to do to take time for you?
I like to walk, do yoga and my daily meditation practice.
Tell us one interesting or fun fact about you?
During the first Lock down I started to create natural skincare products and naturally candles, which I am really enjoying making and it's been keeping me busy.
