Why Your Skin Needs a Little Extra Care During Summer (Especially During the Menopause)
After the recent spell of warm weather, many of my clients have been telling me the same thing:
"My skin just doesn't feel like itself."
Dryness, tightness, puffiness around the eyes and a complexion that's looking a little tired are all common concerns at this time of year. While we often think of winter as the season that dries out our skin, summer can be just as challenging.
Heat, sun exposure, air conditioning, increased perspiration and spending more time outdoors can all leave our skin dehydrated. Add the hormonal changes of the menopause into the mix, and it's easy to see why so many women feel their skin needs a little extra support.
Why does skin become dehydrated in summer?
Our skin naturally loses water throughout the day, but higher temperatures can speed up this process. Sweating, sun exposure and even cooling fans or air conditioning can all contribute to moisture loss.
When the skin becomes dehydrated, you may notice:
Tightness after cleansing
A dull or tired-looking complexion
More visible fine lines
Increased sensitivity
Rough or uneven texture
Puffiness, particularly around the eyes
The good news is that a few simple treatments can make a real difference.
The benefits of facial lymphatic drainage for your skin
One of my favourite treatments during the warmer months is a lymphatic drainage facial.
This gentle, rhythmic massage encourages the natural movement of lymphatic fluid, helping to reduce puffiness and improve circulation. As circulation increases, oxygen and nutrients are delivered more efficiently to the skin, leaving your complexion looking brighter, fresher and more radiant.
Many clients notice that their face feels lighter and more sculpted after treatment, while the skin appears healthier and more refreshed.
For women experiencing the menopause, lymphatic drainage can be particularly beneficial. Hormonal changes often affect the skin's ability to retain moisture and produce collagen, which may lead to dryness, sensitivity and fluid retention. Supporting the lymphatic system with gentle massage can help reduce puffiness while encouraging a calmer, healthier-looking complexion.
Why exfoliation is just as important
Hydration isn't just about applying moisturiser.
If dead skin cells have built up on the surface of the skin, even the best skincare products struggle to absorb properly.
That's why I love combining gentle exfoliation with deep hydration.
Dry body brushing helps stimulate circulation while gently removing dead skin cells, leaving the skin feeling smoother and softer. Gentle exfoliation also allows nourishing products to penetrate more effectively, so your skin can make the most of every drop of hydration.
Following exfoliation with rich, nourishing body butter helps lock moisture into the skin, leaving it beautifully soft, comfortable and glowing.
My favourite hydration heroes
When skin is feeling thirsty, there are two products I reach for time and time again.
Rainforest Dew is a lightweight yet intensely hydrating serum that floods the skin with moisture without feeling heavy. It leaves the complexion looking plump, fresh and beautifully dewy.
I then follow with the Comfort Food Hydration Mask, which deeply nourishes and comforts dehydrated skin while helping to strengthen the skin barrier and lock in long-lasting hydration.
Together, they're the perfect combination for restoring comfort, softness and glow to summer-stressed skin.
