Aromatherapy has been used for centuries, cultures such as the Egyptian's & Roman's used plants and herbs for cosmetic, medical and religious purposes. They also used essential oils for embalming, preserving and rituals.
In recent years, essential oils have gained popularity within the use of holistic/complementary therapies and are now gaining attention from health authorities.
What is aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils which come from plant extracts. Essential oils help to support our health and well-being physically and emotionally.
Essential oils can be used to work with the body in many ways. The fastest way they can penetrate the body is through inhalation which sends messages to the brain and it's limbic system. The aroma can trigger memories, emotions, basic instincts and mechanical functions.
Oils can be absorbed in to our skin using massage, baths and preparations. The skin is the largest human organ as it covers most of the body. The molecules of an essential oil, can enter the tiny pores of the epidermis, the skins surface layer and can also penetrate through the hair follicles and sweat glands. Once the oil reaches the blood capillaries in the second layer of the skin called the dermis. It can then be transported around the whole body.
Aromatherapy can support all the systems of the body and many ailments. It can reduce stress and tension from the body, create a feeling of well-being, balance and calm. Essential oils can also help the body to heal and support the immune system.
Safety Data: Essential oils should not be applied directly to the skin, they should be diluted in a carrier oil using a dilution ratio. Children and women who are pregnant or breast feeding should use essential oils with caution under he supervision of a doctor or qualified aromatherapist. Essential oils should never be swallowed.
